About Future Drawn
Frequently Asked Questions: Answered Below
We joined forces when we realized the oneLINE art style of Jonathan Applegate was unique and he needed an expert to help him navigate the world of small business ownership.
Together we have created a fun gallery space in one of Denver’s hottest neighborhoods. Each visitor can experience the oneLINE in a safe bright environment.
How Did They First Meet?
In 2012, Kim was living in Rochester New York, and she came back to Denver to participate in her daughter’s DIY festival. Jonathan had a monotype t-shirt stand, and Kim bought a shirt.
About a year later they ran into each other again, but this time Kim had moved back to Colorado and was living in Boulder working for a medical device company. Then a while later, they met again after Kim had moved back to the Berkeley neighborhood in 2014.
They met for dinner, and after about 3 hours of conversation about nothing but art and science, they knew many great conversations would follow. As they learned more about each other, they saw how their different backgrounds and education would be a strong partnership.
What was the spark that made them decide they had a viable business plan to open a gallery?
Kim’s position as a global product manager required her to conduct surgeon focus groups. She had the idea to ask Jonathan apply for the position with the team. They all loved him, and he was hired as a contractor to create several storyboards in water color to guide the focus group discussions.
Jonathan was able to take descriptions of surgical environments and turn them into surgical scenes that were invaluable in vetting concepts for future designs. He traveled with the team, and during off hours, Kim and Jonathan were able to see art museums in Paris, Düsseldorf, Berlin, New York, San Francisco, Chicago, and Tel Aviv.
They realized they made a great team, and they could spend hours evaluating all the art, nature, and cultures they visited. Jonathan wanted to become a full-time artist, but he didn’t know where to begin. Kim wanted to start a viable business so she had something to pour her creative energy into after retirement from her career as a chemist. In a crazy leap, they incorporated Future Drawn, LLC in 2016.
Why exactly did they decide to focus on the oneLINE style only?
In the beginning, they hadn’t decided to focus on the oneLINE, but they quickly realized it was really special. In all their travels, and Kim’s travels before they met, they had never seen anything like it. The incorporation of the START and END was an idea provided by Kim’s oldest daughter, and it helped complete the idea.
When you follow the line on all of Jonathan’s oneLINE’s you will go on a journey of joy and discovery. His upbringing in the mountain town of Bailey Colorado is reflected in his ability to capture natural scenes and organic content. His brief study of industrial design influenced his ability to create depth with a single non-intersecting line.
His interpretations of skylines, houses, and architectural structures provide depth. The unexpected turns and twists that give 3-D perspective, is where the fun resides. Jonathan is able to place the path of the line within the negative space needed for the human eye to appreciate the image. When he dives into organic subject matter, he relies on his time spent in nature as a child, and the viewer can feel the joy that is transferred into the oneLINE path.
What went into the development of the style?
The oneLINE style is an adaptation of the contour line, which is taught in almost every beginning drawing class. What makes Jonathan’s application special is how he is able to hold an image in his head while he creates not only a contour line, but a continuous line that never crosses or intersects.
This means if he backs himself into a corner, so to speak, he must restart the drawing or painting. It also means that in order to for him to deliver the correct dimensionality in the final image he has use a technique that forces him to begin a piece of the image, and then come back to complete that portion later. A tree branch crossing in front of itself in 3-D space is a great example.
His first drawings were not as intricate as what he is capable of today, and it is exciting to think about what he will be able to produce after another seven years of continued practice. This is why Future Drawn decided to open a gallery dedicated to pursuit of this newly defined style. They cannot wait to show you where they go.
What have been the major milestones in the past 7 years?
The first big deal was the night they decided to come up with the name for their company. They created a word cloud of values, objectives, and descriptors. They are both very drawn to the future because they understand each of us has the power to create our own idea of a perfect world. Out of that simple thought came Future Drawn. When they researched the handles for social media, URL, and Colorado Business registry, everything was available. Boom! They incorporated in February 2016, and did a soft launch of the business while they searched for the right location.
Before they had a physical gallery, they did a couple commission projects on Tennyson Street. The first project was with Mas Kaos (current site of Kalaka Mexican Kitchen), where Jonathan did two murals for the restaurant that were not oneLINEs. Their second job was to provide a real estate closing gift to the previous owners of what is now Berkeley Alley Beer Co.
The closing gift led them to develop Art You Can Feel, which was a huge leap forward in their understanding of how versatile the oneLINE could be. The biggest hurdle before being able to show the world what they could do with a single line, was building a library of content so they could select the best of the best for prints, greeting cards and any application they could think of.
In March of 2020, they were asked to provide interior murals for the new Asher Hotel on Tennyson Street. This job saved the business during COVID when they had to close the gallery. They placed the Union Station image surrounding the elevator on the main floor, and the Denver Skyline at the entrance to the hotel on the second floor. Down the hall where the suites are located they placed four local landmarks to provide a walking tour of the neighborhood to guests.
They turned the mural images into greeting cards, and then expanded the print offering to twenty-six images from larger canvas paintings. In November of 2024 they added a special scented candle poured into a reusable cocktail glass, a can glass style with the Denver Skyline, and T-shirts.
After 7 years at the gallery, their vision has come together through self-funding and the support of the neighborhood. They love sharing their vision with every visitor to the space, and believe the experience is central to the oneLINE art. Customers have commented on the positive energy they feel while they explore the variety of oneLINE applications and products.
What is the “oneLINE Experience” all about?
Future Drawn is focused on translating their joy, perspective, and creativity to each of their visitors through art. The oneLINE style is truly unique, and everyone they meet is enchanted by following the line. People smile involuntarily, and they regularly bring in family and friends to share the experience.
Following the line can be meditative due to the twists and turns required to make the image pop without the line touching. A typical 8.5” X 11” drawing takes about 30 to 45 minutes to follow, and you must pay attention or you will loose your spot. Because the act of tracing the line requires focus, it wisks you away into a black and white world.
Come visit, or tour the murals throughout Denver. Future Drawn plans to grow and share their vision of a new art style that can be applied in so many ways. Keep following the story, and please come visit.
